When is Chinese New Year? Chinese New year 2011 is on 02-3-2010
How to Celebrate Chinese New Year? Chinese New Year Eve is the date for reuniting people and being in a state of thankfullness. Chinese New Year is also called Chinese Spring festival.
- Clean the whole house: This is the symbol of cleaning the bad chi that left in the previous year in order to welcome the good chi in for the coming year. People also need to have hair cut, take a shower and dress prettily. This is also the good day to throw away the old Feng shui items that are useless.
- Make or serve a fruit cake and cook a lot of food. The food for Chinese New Year Eve should be very abundant.
- Pray to the Divine energy “God” and ancestors who passed away using the fruit cake and other foods. Give thanks for safety in the previous year.
- Hang/put Spring Festival couplets on gateposts. Spring Festival couplets are red New Year Scrolls which are originated from ancient scripts. In modern, people write auspicious sentences on the scrolls to wish them wealthy, prosperous and safe in the coming year. In addition to the couplets, people also paste some pictures, which symbolize good luck and noble, on the door panels or windows.
- Gather together eating the dinner. This is also the time to wish something each other. In addition, people can't eat all the food. The remaining food is the symbol of abundant and wealth.
- After finishing dinner, people gather together and write on small pieces of paper all the events and bad habits, or anything they are done with from the previous year. At midnight young people wish their parents a longer live, then all dance and clang gongs, bells, or pots to welcome the New Year coming. It is a tradition to stay up all night.
- Old people put money inside the red envelope and give them to the younger and hope the younger good luck in the coming year. Giving red envelope is called "Li Shi";
The followings things that people don't do on Chinese New Year Day
- Refrain from the use water to clean the floor or dump trash. Water is the symbol of wealth. People don't want the money to go away. Dumping trash is like "giving away".
- Refrain from eating or killing any four legged animals. It symbolizes safety for all and peace with no war.
- Refrain from braking glass, mirrors, or any porcelain bowls or plates. Broken is the opposite of reunite.
- Refrain from the use of scissors, knives or needles. Using scissors or needles is said it will bring bad chi or cut the good chi coming in with the New Year. Best is to put all knives and scissors in a drawer, out of sight for the day.
- Refrain from speaking inauspicious words. Refrain from talking negatively about anyone or any situation.
- For more auspicious luck, refrain from bathing or showering on that day, it is believed those actions will wash the New Year good chi away before it becomes attached.
